The IoT (Internet of Things) conference was held\u00a0 in Linz (Austria) this year. Mario Aehnelt (Fraunhofer IGD Rostock, Germany), Sebastian B\u00fcttner (Institute Industrial IT\/SmartFactoryOWL, Germany),\u00a0Markus Funk (TU Darmstadt), and I\u00a0organized a workshop\u00a0to discuss HCI\u00a0topics\u00a0within the area of IoT. What does IoT exactly mean, how we will interact with smart devices in the future, how influence our behavior (and maybe break bad habits \ud83d\ude09 ), and how to design smart environments in our daily life were some discussion key points.<\/p>\n

Markus Funk<\/strong> opened the workshop by\u00a0pointing out the focus of HCI research for future IoT development (which is the user interaction design and implementation).<\/p>\n

\"persuasion\"<\/p>\n

Diego Casado Mansilla<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>presented\u00a0how IoT can be used to\u00a0change the persuasion of past behavior of human beings. By augmenting a coffee machine with lights indicating the current energy consumption, the individual awareness regarding energy consumption should be increased.<\/p>\n

\"design_thinking\"<\/p>\n

Nela Murauer<\/strong>\u00a0showed design approaches of how pick-by-vision systems can be designed\u00a0to provide an affordable experience for\u00a0people working in the area of commissioning.<\/p>\n

\"eyes_are_faster\"<\/p>\n

Florian Jungwirth<\/strong>,\u00a0Michaela Murauer, <\/strong>and\u00a0<\/strong>Michael Haslgr\u00fcbler-Huemer<\/strong> presented how\u00a0eyes can be employed to interact with devices. Avoiding\u00a0the Midas Touch effect and increasing the eye interaction accuracy was the\u00a0focus of their work.<\/p>\n

The workshop concluded with a group assignment, where the workshop participants\u00a0discussed the topics Security<\/strong>, Learnability<\/strong>, Interaction<\/strong>, and\u00a0Privacy<\/strong> for future intelligent environments.\u00a0The trade-off between privacy and\u00a0interaction space was generously discussed during the workshop.\u00a0Furthermore, the complexity of interacting with all these devices over a unified platform\u00a0was lively discussed.<\/p>\n

Overall, the workshop gave us many insights about how to design ubiquitous computing environments. We thank the workshop attendees for their participation in the workshop and are looking forward for future collaborations!<\/p>\n
